WHAT STYLE OF MARTIAL ARTS?
Instructor Kym Reid's background begins with 18 years of contact karate based on the 1st karate style in Australia. The basis and principles of conditioning and reality continues in the teaching of Jujitsu which includes many drills to build reflexes, confidence and to teach principles and application.
CAN ANYONE DO IT?
The style is flexible for any abilities or restrictions. We have novices of all ages and people of over 20 years experience from other styles enjoying our training methods. Best to come along and have a couple of nights free to see if you're comfortable with the training.
WHAT RANK IS THE INSTRUCTOR?
Sensei Kym Reid has trained continuously since 1972, achieving 7th Dan with the global I.B.F. organization, 6th Dan with the Japanese Dai Nippon Butoku Kai and a 4th Dan under the Szlagowski Karate Association. He is also one of only 2 people in Australia to receive a Renshi title from the DNBK. Currently he is also the President of International Budo Federation Australia.
WHY ARE THERE NO GRADING FEES OR SET DAYS FOR GRADING?
Gradings are given when you have reached a standard and have the knowledge. Character is very important in martial arts so we reward effort. The journey is at your pace as an individual with different physiques, different outcomes and different results. Those who need pressure testing will get it, those who want to compete can chose the style of competition - Kudo, Cage MMA or non contact.
There are only 6 colour belt grades before the Shodan (Blackbelt - beginners belt). It can take up to 9 years to reach it. We have many with years of experience still take 5 years or more. We have always focused on outcomes, not incomes so we don't need students looking for the next grading but learning how to work hard to achieve a reflex. Some styles have 20 levels with costs well over a $100 for each!

WHAT DO I NEED TO START?
Begin wearing a tracksuit or an old gi if need be and strong close fitting T shirt. A gi can cost up to $40 so try first, there is no rush to spend money. We train bare feet so cleanliness is important. Short nails for safety and be aware that piercings could get ripped out.
WHAT HAPPENS ON THE NIGHT?
The night begins with approximately 20 minutes of warmups, stretching and strengthening
After this we do kicks and punches on the bags and continue on with judo breakfalls
After a few drills in wrist locking, evasive movement and karate students break into groups to train their syllabus.
From this point some juniors bow out and class continues in sparring or self-defence to continuous attacks
