2013
On Monday evening on the 11th Feb. Randy and Blocker opened their club in Craigmore. My son Jake, Daryl, Justin and Jessica all attended in support and had a good night of training. Randy and Blocker are excellent practioners. Blocker not only trains also with Ricardo Vargas and myself.
Boy, was I stuffed on Saturday 16th of Feb. Ricardo had opened his new dojo at Underdale and had Bruce Lee student Richard Bustillo in for a seminar. It was hot in the uninsulated shed and was certainly cooler outside. However we managed 4 hours of solid workout on boxing and focus pad routines, elbow and knee combinations, and ground work from in the guard and counters to strangles. I drank 3 litres of water and still lost 1.5 kg. Richard was the 3rd Bruce Lee student I have trained with after Dan Inosato and Larry Hartsell.
Saturday 2nd of March was spent training in Kenpo Karate Motion with Graham Lelliott. Host was Tim Barnes. Once again Jessica was there to improve her knowledge and skills.
Sunday the 10th of March I hosted Jason Griffith's visit with students of Sobukan and Goshin Sen Jutsu all enjoying our hospitality. Main drills were release from guillotine, rear strangle, rear shoulder grabs and the headlock. These then were presented as one man drills (to show reference to kata) and then we flowed the drills together. A good workout and I still have bruises to my inner thigh that would show why I moved so quickly.
It was also a pleasure to present Daryl Hoey a Shodan in Jujitsu for his 19 years of dedication to former instructor Graham Dunn (deceased). Daryl has trained for 32 Years altogether.
On April 27th I attended an internal grading for Mick Murphy of Toushido Karate. He had lost 10 Kg and was eager to show us his stuff. He had a clear understanding of the IBF criteria for grading, however the prerequisites for his club recognition of him as a 5th Dan included maybe 5 times more personel training than many other instructors. He did a great job even though he began to cramp up after the 3 hr session. Must thank him for the tributes including the Bonsai plant. Good work Mick and congratulations
On May the 5th I held the IBF Training day. I had over 80 serious martial artists attend with guest presenters being Ricardo Vargas (2nd Gen Bruce Lee), Dave Gartland (2nd Gen Ed Parker), Ash Sinclair (BJJ), Shawn Donaldson (1st KU blackbelt in SA), and Mario Maiello (Kyushin Kai/Kickboxing). Thanks to Ricardo for the apreciation certificate. A great day finishing with pizza and drinks. On top of that we raised over $900 for Beyond Blue.
It was also good to have one of my old Jujitsu instructors Craig Swingler there. The video here was done by Dave Gartland sums up the day.
On the same week I was also accepted into the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai. This organisation was the governing body of martial arts in Japan since about 1895 You need to be invited and then checked. 4 months of checks later I received my General Membership. There has only been one 10th Dan. A 9th in recent years who has since passed away and the chairman is 8th Dan. So this organisation is one of integrity that lives by the timelines, what does it tell you about all the "Grandmasters, 8th and 9th Dans" posing around nowdays? Recognition as a true martial artist is more of an honour than any superficial gradings.
Was happy to be a guest instructor for the Jeff Speakman cancer fundraiser at Anthony Hockleys venue.
Caught up with a few friends and had a great day. I'm sure Jess enjoyed it too.
Sifu David Crook took the the lesson for the night and in search of Moss Hollis's true details we met with other students of Moss, Karol Stojko and Dave Fitzgerald. Since then we have had contact with several other members and Dave Crook will be relaying it all to the grand son, Richard Hollis.
Martial artists tend to train whenever possible and support others while pretenders spend their time trying to get recognition or parading in hideous poses and outfits.
41 years later I'm still enjoying the company of so many talented people. You can never grow by just training kids 1 hr per week or mixing with those of little ability, creditability or substance.
In our world there is a great network of very talented martial artists with unquestionable lineage and integrity. Some of our friends are 2nd generation students of Bruce Lee, Ed Parker and the Gracies. I have the pleasure of still being in contact with my instructor's peers and am 2nd generation to Wally Szlagowski. These are real credentials.
The IBF continues to grow with new members and personal friends join. Dave Gooding (Brisbane Jinen Karate) is our sister club in Qld. Student "Blocker with Randy have joined their club (Combative Martial Arts) along with old friend Phil Barker in WA (Australian Jujitsu Karate Do). Mario Maiello was one of Jess's former instructors and is personally coaching Yianni (MyClub Fit). Ivan and Nathan McWilliams have both trained or competed with me at some time over the last 30 years and now have their Qld and SA branch as members (Kemka Silat). Finally is a very nice man who was a guest at the last IBF training day, Ricardo Vargas (JKD). All are well accredited, all are now members of the IBF.
On the weekend of the 23rd of June five of us trained at Aldinga Beach branch of David Gartland's Kenpo Karitsu not only training in his style but then finishing in BJJ as taught by 2nd generation coach, Ash Sinclair. Great day with over 30 people, which is bigger than some organizations can get to their training days. I'm proud to have had the opportunity to bring these guys together at our IBF training day last month.
Congratulations go to Ashley and Alicija from the EHMA club. These girls taught my son Kenpo in his early years. It was a pleasure to be invited to sit on the panel on the 6th of July with Sensei's Tim Barnes and Peter Tass for their Blackbelt gradings at Golden Grove. They took the 3 hour grading on in terrific fashion and I can tell you now, you have to have a good memory. Great work girls.
On the 16th of July I took a small class of teenagers at the Hive through some very basic concepts of martial arts. I think they enjoyed themselves and in future we may have more regular attendances.
On July 21st I was invited to attend the grading day for Combative Martial Arts alongside Ricardo Vargas. A great afternoon watching kids first then the adults including John Bryan. Thanks Blocker and Randy for the invite.
An exciting night of training with Jason Griffiths and Kurt Graham on the 25th August. We ended up with over 40 people training and had a ball. Thanks to all who attended, was bigger than some organisations training days, certainly a better caliber of martial artists.
On October the 20th 2013 at the Marion Liesure centre as IBF state President I hosted another training Day. Once again there was quite a variety of instructors giving support and thank all who attended for the respect shown. over 80 people enjoyed the training with Ricardo vargas, Kade Marsh, Mick Murphy, Ant'z Veen & Brett harrison, Shane Lehmann, Terry Riches, Bruce Jordan and Alana Gregory. Very few organizations are as active in bringing together so many martial artists. All surplus funds went to Beyondblue, a total of $1670. We also met with former IBF President who ran Peter Shullers club who filled in a lot of history of the IBF which was based in SA in the 1970's. He is currently putting together documentation.
Often we see organizations, some formed purely for self grading, calling for people to attend free seminar's to give recognition to "Grand Masters" who otherwise would struggle to be known. We do not attend these jokes on the public by giving in to "rent-a-crowd".November 9th was the Fight For Life 2014 cancer fundraiser in Melbourne. I was a guest presenter and Jess, Jordan, Blocker, Randy and Harry decided to head over as well. It was a fantastic day, Jess and I did demonstrations for over 170 people and got to meet with many of our budo brothers. Thanks to all those who contributed.
